MATERIAL

Tina Homayoun

August 2021

Tina Homayoun spends her summer in Mexico City experimenting with raw materials and mediums. This exhibit displays an exercise of new technique, using everyday material of the Mercado, finding voice in the orientation and abstraction of scale, replacing traditional canvas with wood, and collaging tarp, fabric, house paint, nail, clay, sand, and other forms of raw material.  The exhibit Material presents a handful of singular experimental pieces along with two ongoing series born from this experimentation - 'Mexico City Rain' and 'Portuguese.'

Mexico City Rain uses flat canvas with a base of acrylic and the rainfall in Mexico City to create the texture on canvas. The result is a visual delicacy that suggests presence, embodiment, appreciation of the season and natural weather of CDMX.

Portuguese is a series of layered house paint, oil, and acrylic using palm, finger, brush, knife, and towel on wood board. Each board had several practice paintings before its final version. There are over 20 layers of paint on each of the boards.
